This song was written at Hicks Lake on a camping trip with my kids. This was a rare trip where we were on our own. For 4 nights we enjoyed our favourite place but without friends to hang out with we were a bit bored and ended up writing a song together while hanging out at the fire.

The song became our anthem for the rest of the summer, adding verses as we went along camping by the ocean and on various gulf islands as we do every summer. It had a lot of repeated parts so everyone around the fire could sing along easily.

In the studio, most of those repeated parts were dropped as the song was way way way too long. We also added the talking parts between verses in studio with Marc Atkinson’s son Odus speaking the words.

Camping is our happy place. Where we get back to nature, live outside for weeks/months on end. This summer will be our 10th year returning to camp at Hicks lake. It has been such a blessing in our lives, swimming and being there, feeling the earth and smelling the wind, making smores and singing songs around the fire.
